Lunar or Chinese New Year or Spring Festival is the longest and most significant festival in the Chinese calendar.
Chinese New Year is celebrated on the first day of the First Moon of the lunar calendar. The corresponding date in the solar calendar varies from as early as January 21st to as late as February 19th. in 2006 this first day of the new year is 29th January. The rotating cycle of twelve animal signs was a method for naming the years in traditional China. The animal signs follow one another in an established order and are repeated every twelve years.
2006 will be the year of the dog - people born in each animal's year are reputed to have some of that animal's personality. Those born in dog years tend to be loyal, kind, and generous. They will work to right wrongs and are able to keep secrets. Flowers and plants are an important part of the New Year decorations - live blooming plants symbolize rebirth and new growth. Flowers are believed to be symbolic of wealth and high positions in one's career.
This occasion is therefore an important one on many flower producers’ calendars.
